Agriculture is the world’s oldest industry. From its ancient roots to present day, it has changed, evolved and adapted as progress in technique and technology have shaped the way crops are grown. At Willo, we’ve taken this even further by using the most advanced plant production system in the world that has revolutionized cultivation through automation, AI and plant science. Powered by OnePointOne’s industry-leading, proprietary vertical farming technology, Opollo™, we are on a mission to feed the 1.1 billion people that began this millennium hungry with the ultimate goal to nourish and heal humanity. This is at the core of everything we do.
We’re often asked what is unique about vertical farming and how it compares to traditional agriculture. Vertical farming is still considered a new industry (relatively speaking), but we already can measure its many benefits.
First, we use vertical-plane aeroponics (as opposed to hydroponics), which is incredibly efficient. This is a type of farming that does not use soil or flowing water and instead relies upon a perfectly controlled environment that is able to grow produce in the most pristine conditions possible. Our aeroponics method uses a fine mist to provide moisture and nutrients to our plants – this method also allows for more oxygen to reach the plant roots, leading to a higher yield (250 times more plants per acre when compared to traditional agriculture) and healthier, heartier plants which leads to a longer shelf life.
Additionally, our food is 100% free of pesticides and herbicides, non-GMO, and not exposed to any pollutants, including those that could be introduced by humans. The result is an unparalleled product that isn’t just good for you, but better for the planet.
On average, Willo produce:
- Uses 99% less water
- Produces 250x more plants/acre
- Has a 3-5x longer shelf life
- Grows 2x faster
But our vision is much more than that. We also seek to mediate our environmental impact and promote a greener, cleaner environment in other aspects of production, from our packaging to our delivery. Every Willo Harvest Box is packed in thoughtfully designed packaging that is recyclable and reusable. And, if that wasn’t enough, our clamshell containers are also made of 99% plant-based bioplastic and are BPI and CMA-certified compostable, with labels that are biodegradable and compostable as well.
It’s also packaging that keeps our produce fresh from the moment it's harvested to when it reaches your doorstep within a matter of days. Much of the produce that you buy at your local grocery store has traveled an average of 1,500 miles, contributing to CO2 emissions and fossil fuel consumption. While our produce also has to travel from our flagship farm in Arizona, our goal is to eventually bridge the gap with vertical farms throughout the US and the world, creating hyper-local food sources in climates unable to grow traditionally due to harsh weather or lack of resources. We aim to eliminate food deserts and shortages in the areas that need them most. While we’ve made a strong start and this is just the beginning, we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
